Description

Red Oolong|Luye, Taitung

First introduced in 2008, Red Oolong is a unique tea variety native to Luye in Taitung. Developed and promoted by the Taitung Branch of the Tea Research and Extension Station, this tea thrives in Luye’s hilly terrain and large day-night temperature swings, which give it a rich and sweet flavor profile. Though its fermentation level is close to black tea, it retains the traditional oolong step of kill-green (sha qing) and is finished with heavy roasting, resulting in a vibrant amber-red liquor and notes of ripe fruit. Blending the sweetness of black tea with the depth of oolong, this distinctive tea has gained popularity among younger tea drinkers in recent years.

Fermentation & Taste

Red Oolong is a heavily fermented tea (about 80%) with a high level of roasting, creating deep, toasty aromas and a rich mouthfeel. The tea liquor is a clear amber-red, smooth and full-bodied, with ripe fruit notes and a hint of honey. The sweetness lingers in the throat, offering a well-layered experience. Suitable for both hot and cold brews, it is especially refreshing as a summer cold brew and has become a rising star in the modern tea market.

Natural Farming & Craftsmanship

The tea garden follows natural farming practices, using organic fertilizers and manual weeding to nurture healthy soil, allowing tea trees to grow in a toxin-free environment. The tea-making process is highly precise and carefully adapted to daily weather and environmental conditions—from sun withering and indoor oxidation to repeated rolling and heavy roasting—to achieve the best possible flavor. This commitment to both the land and craftsmanship defines the unique charm of Red Oolong from Luye, Taitung.
